Event Profile
Each year, one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. The cause is unknown; however, it is the most common type of cancer and the second leading
cause of cancer deaths among American men.
The Great Prostate Cancer Challenge® is a national initiative of urology physicians' practices designed to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer
during the month of September, National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
In 2008, five urology practices across the country participated and raised approximately $250,000. Those proceeds were designated by market for research and/or
community awareness. In Indianapolis, Urology of Indiana worked with the American Urological Association Foundation to conduct Community Cross Training, a CME
accredited program for local health care professionals to promote urologic health and wellness across Indiana.
In 2010, the number of participating urology practices has grown to more than ten, but the centerpiece event in each market is a fitness run and walk, the
proceeds of which go to ZERO — The Project to End Prostate Cancer, a non-profit organization whose mission mirrors its name. They see a future
where all men diagnosed with prostate cancer are cured or able to manage their illness with good quality of life, with the support they need to minimize physical
and emotional suffering and to cope effectively throughout their cancer journeys.
In partnership with Urology of Indiana, ZERO provides comprehensive treatment information to patients, education to those at risk and more free screenings than
ever before. ZERO also increases research funds from the federal government to find new treatments and funds local grants to end the disease.
