Brief Description
Welcome to the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge® Baltimore
The Great Prostate Cancer Challenge®, the premier prostate cancer event series in America, is a tight-knit community
activity that brings together athletes, cancer survivors, physicians, caretakers, family members and friends. It is the
only men’s health fundraiser in the nation that is supported by physician groups and was founded by Chesapeake Urology
Associates. We invite you to lace up your running shoes for our annual 5K Run and join us in our mission to end prostate
cancer. You can be a force in this growing cause by joining us at our 5K Race and 1 Mile Fun Walk on Sunday, September 26, 2010.
We will have many activities for adults and children including the Ravens cheerleaders, the Oriole Bird, a Kids' Run and Stroller
Stroll, free food and beverages, antique cars, the corvette club, a moon bounce, great give-aways, and Hall of Fame football
players from Baltimore Colts. There will be booths where you can learn more about men's health issues, play with the daVinci
Robot, run or walk a mile or five miles or just hang around and have fun.
Marty Bass from WJZ is our MC and Lenny Moore is our Honorary Chairmanof the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge®. There is
so much more. Please, come out, have fun and help raise awareness about the growing problem of prostate cancer. This year alone,
200,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 28,000 men will die as a result of the disease. Let's put a stop to that!

About Chesapeake Urology Associates (CUA)
Chesapeake Urology Associates (CUA), the premier urology practice in the Mid-Atlantic region and the third
largest urology practice group in the nation, is located throughout the greater Baltimore area in 16 locations. The practice established early on its commitment to support
and give back to the community.
In 2007, Dr. Sanford J. Siegel, President and CEO of Chesapeake Urology, created the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge® (originally call Great Strides Against Prostate cancer),
an event solely focused on prostate cancer as a way to uphold that value. The goal was to increase awareness, provide free screening opportunities for men in need, and raise money
for prostate cancer research. Dr. Siegel announced this new event focused on men and prostate cancer, to be held in September during National Prostate Cancer Health Month, during
a well-attended press conference. The American Urological Association became the beneficiary of all proceeds raised.
The GPCC is the only physician-based prostate cancer awareness and fund-raising program in the country.
The first event turned out to be the most successful first-time event of its kind in Maryland, with more than 1,100 participants and more than $135,000 raised. Former NFL great and
Hall of Famer Lenny Moore became the Honorary Chairman of the GPCC, and remains in that role today, and WJZ TV and Radio One stepped up as media partners, giving the Great Prostate
Cancer Challenge® a big boost in awareness.
The vision grew. The Second Annual Great Prostate Cancer Challenge® 5K Run and 1 Mile Fun Walk was held in 2008! More than $200,000 was raised. An exciting benefit concert starring
the great Patti LaBelle was added to increase awareness of prostate cancer, and free prostate cancer screenings were offered in partnership with eight of the leading African-American
churches in Baltimore. The Governor of Maryland proclaimed September as Prostate Cancer Awareness month in the State (and again made that proclamation in 2009). That year, the GPCC
came very close to reaching its goal to screen more than 1,000 men who might ordinarily not have a prostate exam and PSA test.
Success was contagious! In 2008, four other urology groups joined the GPCC to create awareness and raise funds for prostate cancer research through their highly successful 5K Run
events: Harrisburg, PA; Indianapolis, IN; Nashville, TN; Richmond, VA.
In 2009, a new partner and beneficiary, ZERO — The Project to End Prostate Cancer, joined forces with the GPCC in its efforts to help save lives through screening, awareness and
advocacy, and funds for prostate cancer research. The GPCC in Baltimore was back stronger than ever with its 5K/1Mile Fun Walk in 2009 where more than 1,200 runners and
walkers came together to support the GPCC. Prostate cancer screenings were held from May through October. More than 1,200 men were screened and 8 percent had a positive PSA test and
required further evaluation. $175,000 was raised, bringing the overall three year total funds raised for prostate cancer awareness, research and free screenings to more than a half
million dollars!
To add to the growing excitement, the GPCC grew to include even more cities across the nation, spreading the word about prostate cancer: Kansas City, KS, Long Island, NY, Memphis, TN
(Tennessee is the only State with TWO GPCC races!).
Chesapeake Urology is proud to have led the way for this important effort that will take place in 12 cities in 2010.
